Blog 1

Growing up, I have been exposed to all 8 types of mass media. As a student when I was younger, I was familiar with textbooks for educational purposes as well as fictional books read during my free time. With newspapers and the news, I would always tune into a news channel as I ate my breakfast and got ready before school. Magazines weren't a big part of my life growing up. I would come across them at the grocery store and flip through the pages if an article on the front page caught my attention, but that's it. Television and movies are something I enjoyed as a child and still enjoy even until now. However, my interest in both television channel and movie genre growing up didn't change, rather expanded. As far as audio and radio, I had a few limits with these. Before I would drive myself around, I didn't have total control of what radio station to choose. There were also limits as far as the internet. I would use AOL and used a teenage account.

I have never had a job specifically in the media, but I am a current employee at Michael Kors and make the visual displays that indirectly contribute to the brands media marketing. I would like to one day have a career in the media and be a curator of it. I have dreams of being an inspiration and tastemaker to the masses. I want my work to have a positive effect on the current media, which ever path my life may lead me, that will live longer than I will on earth.

I will be transferring to The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising where I will major in Visual Communications. Visual Communications is the visual message you get from all types of two-dimensional images from photos, to signs, to advertisement etc. I would say that this major is related to the media. With the different types of two-dimensional images, you are displaying your vision to the world. No matter who is viewing it, you are mass communicating to all kinds of people.

I feel that my major is directly connected to the media. Current media is all about quick visual attention with an attention span at the shortest its ever been before. Visual communication is one of the most important elements in todays current mass media. It covers everything from branding, visually aesthetic products, marketing, and more. Without proficient visual communication skills, you will fail in gaining mass media attention. And with social media at its highest usage this day in age and only continuing to grow, exception visual communication skills are a necessity to succeed for any business.
